2016: Clearance Peters Remains Unrivalled

There are many music video directors in Nigeria today but one is the most hardworking and arguably the most creative. His name is Clarence Peters.  In an earlier post published a couple of months agoI compared Unlimited LA with Clarence based on the latter’s loss to the former at the 2015 Headies Awards and their works from then till the end of February. It was arrived at it would be a hot competition between the two directors. Clarence’s works from the end of February till now have proven his achievements and brilliant mind are difficult to surmount- he remains unrivalled.

A couple of weeks ago, Tiwa Savage released the visual for a track off her R.E.D album ‘If I Start To Talk’. The director showed us he is not ready to chill. He shot a very rich video with the use of African traditional attires and the use of imagery. The scene showing a man and a woman sitting and lying naked and the shot of a foot crushing a head portray the very frustration and suffering endured before God’s blessings and strengthened the core message of the song. The video has recorded, just in fifteen days, almost 850,000 views on Youtube. Two stunning qualities of the director is his immense and unrivalled creativity and unbelievable energy: ability to re-present the messages of different songs into different images within a little space of time; and relentlessness.

Just a couple of days ago, Phyno released the visual for his latest jam, ‘Fada Fada’ and again, ‘Clarence Shot it’.  Before the video shoot of ‘If Start To Talk’ he had done some great videos like Yemi Alade’s ‘Ferrari’ and Falz’s ‘Soldier’ which are also potential award-winning videos. Timaya released the video of his latest song yesterday and to my  surprise, clarence did it again.  He is so hardworking one starts to wonder if he ever sleeps: an attribute that has placed him above his peers.

On top of all these, Clarence Peters’ versatility covers beautiful story-telling, creative montages, as expressed in ‘If I start To Talk’ and great aerial shots as seen in Phyno’s ‘Connect’ and ‘Fada Fada’. He has shot videos for almost all the artistes in Nigeria from Humblesmith to Davido, Timaya, Phyno, Falz, Chidinma, Wizkid, Illbliss, Flavour and Yemi Alade to mention a few. He remains the Colossus on the Nigerian music video directing scene.
