We have many rich artistes in Nigeria today but truth be told, only a few actually make money from music. When I say make money from music I mean only a few of them have music as their major source wealth. Some of these rich Nigerian artistes are alleged to make money from money-laundering, internet fraud and other shady activities because their luxury lifestyles are not commensurate to their earnings from music. Check out the few hardworking and talented Nigerian musicians and how they make money from music below.
International Nigerian pop star Wizkid, has made so much money from music in the past months. Soco and Fake Love are two of his big earners this year as they sold heavily on iTunes Nigeria. And as I write, Soco’s video has attracted more than ten million views on YouTube. According to YouTube Money Calculator, you earn two thousand six hundred and fifty thousand dollars from every one million views. This means just Soco video has generated over twenty six thousand five hundred dollars for the Starboy not to talk of his several other records that have millions of views. Don’t let us forget his recent concert at the twenty thousand-capacity 02 Arena in London, sold out.
DMW boss, Davido, is another Nigerian act who is makes huge money from music. Immediately Assurance was put out, it rose to the top of Nigeria iTunes chart because it was massively bought by fans. Davido who made so much from his recently concluded 30 Billion World Tour is currently on a UK tour that has recorded many sold-out shows. On top of all that, the videos for Assurance, Flora My Flawa which also sold well on iTunes Nigeria and label’s hits as Aje and Mind, also generated some cool cash.
3. Maleek Berry
Nigerian music producer and recording artiste, Maleek Berry, is one of the few Nigerian artistes who enjoy YouTube’s juicy ‘compensations’. The multi-talented act’s numerous records and thrilling visuals have experienced tens of millions of streams on YouTube. Plus, the multi-talented act goes on tour regularly.
4. Tiwa Savage
This list cannot be complete without the mention of super Nigerian songstress, Tiwa Savage. The Sugarcane EP and the videos for the tracks on the EP as Ma Lo and Get It Now gave Mama J a lot of money. Ma Lo has garnered over twenty million views on YoTube and her latest jams Tiwa’s Vibe and Labalaba also topped iTunes Nigeria Chart.
Nigerian rapper, Olamide, has been earning hugely from YouTube since the release of Wo!! At a time his fans were still watching Wo which was already at about ten million views the video for Science Student came and four months after release it had attracted nine million views. His latest video Kana which dropped three weeks ago has hit almost two million views. Lest I forget, his 7th Studio album Lagos Nawa which he dropped in December, 2017, was also a huge success on iTunes Nigeria.
Please note that the artistes above are not the only talented and hardworking Nigerian artistes who actually make money from music- they are just the top earners from music in Nigeria.
