It is not new for record labels to sign new artistes as it strengthens any label. We have, however, witnessed the signing of many artistes to different well-known Nigerian record labels within a short period: from barely two months ago to date.
In March 2016, news broke out Chidinma left Capital Hills Music she had been with for almost five years for Flavour’s 2nite Entertainment.
Davido, about a month ago, signed Mayorkun and Dremo to HKN/ Davido Music. Days after that, Mayorkun released his debut single, ‘Eleko’, which recorded over a million views on Youtube in twelve days.
Wizkid confirmed about a week ago he just signed a new artiste to StarBoy Entertainment. The name of the artiste is undisclosed yet. This could be made known through a new jam from the artiste.
A couple of days ago, Olamide signed a female artiste to YBNL. This smart move was to fill the void Lil Kesh left and maybe get a female vocalist on the platform to complement Olamide and Chinko Ekun’s rich rap verses.
Yesterday, Five Star Music released a new video online titled ‘Mother Anybody’. It introduced a newly signed rap artiste, X-Busta, to us. For a record label that does mostly Highlife songs, it is obvious it was a move to diversify the kind of music they dish out and a very clever move to appeal to Hip-Hop lovers.
It is indeed a season of record deals. While Nigeria’s biggest record labels are not ready to take the chill pill, big ones are getting bigger and stronger. The Nigerian music scene is becoming more competitive by the day.
