5 Nigerian Rap Artistes Who Do More Than Rap

They are rap artistes but are capable of switching from Rap to any genre they choose any time. They have experimented with other music genres a few times and succeeded. Below is a list of 5 artistes and their respective songs that confirms versatility.

Olamide is a Hip-hop giant but he is unpredictable: You cannot say for sure the kind of music he may experiment with tomorrow. He shocked his fans in 2015 with Melo Melo: a love song that belongs to the Alternative or folk genre. Olamide has experimented with Fuji music as evident in Small Doctor’s You know and Tiwa Savage’s Standing OvationToriomo, off his Eyan Mayweather album, is also an Alternative song a Nigerian mother would sing for her child for him to understand her efforts and hustle just to make him happy.

In most of Reminisce’s rap music, he sings the chorus which is characteristic of Hip-hop artistes. The talented rapper showed off his versatility in 2013 when he dished out an up-tempo Fuji-inspired song , Fantasi, which ended up a hit. In Gboriduro and Angelina, he ends every rap verse with an alternative chorus. Yet, he still does Hip-hop which is his main genre. Recently he dropped ‘Asalamalekun’. A hip-hop song with heavy punchlines. He featured American rap artiste, Wale, in the remix.

Phyno stunned his fans last year when he dropped a mega hit, Connect. While it is hard to say where Connect belongs, it sounds more like a fusion of Alternative Rap and Highlife. Wherever the song belongs to, Phyno succeeded with his venture. Connect clicked. In MI’s Bullion Van, he displayed a switch from rap to Highlife music. I will not be surprised if he dishes out a Highlife song tomorrow because he sang so well in the song. In Seyi Shay’s Mary, he started his verse with R&B but switched suddenly to rap. It feels like he wasn’t the one who just pronounced the R&B lines.

Ice Prince’s versatility got him a collaboration with Highlife legend, Prof. Victor Uwaifo in Krikisi. He changed his rap style here to match the tempo of the Highlife song. Mr DJ is a Dancehall/ Reggae-inspired. No single rap verse and ended up being a very nice tune. His collaboration, Yawa Go Dey, with US-based guitarist, Robbie Celeste further confirms his versatility and creativity. He dropped Alternative rap verses on pure guitar strings.

Lil Kesh, like Reminisce,  sings his chorus in most of his songs. He is good at rap and singing. Off his Y.A.G.I album is a love song titled ‘For you’. It is Alternative by genre. He sang on pure instrumentals from drums and keyboards. He did so well you would want to sing for your partner. He also sang in Hausa: ”yarinya mekeu ina sonki’ which means ‘young girl, cute baby, I love you’.
