Adekunle Gold- ‘About 30’ ( Album Review)

Afro Urban Records boss, Adekunle Gold, finally releases his sophomore album, About 30. It is necessary that an About 30 review is done to ascertain if the 14-tracker is worth the anticipation that preceded its release. Each and every track on About 30 will be reviewed and rated over 5 and an overall rating would be arrived at.

Producers- Jay Weathers, Pheelz, Prgrshn, Seyikeyz, Vtek

Guest appearances- Dyo, Flavour, Jacob Banks, LCGC, Seun Kuti

In January 2018, Adekunle Gold notified us via social media he was about to blow our minds with the About 30 album. And in February, he gave us a peep into the then-highly anticipated album, Ire. Ire blew up immediately after it dropped, dominated the airwaves and for weeks it was number one on iTunes Nigeria chart. Rating: 4.5. Adekunle Gold collaborated with magical Nigerian songstress Dyo for Down With You. The  powerful, London music producer Jay Weathers-produced love joint would make you feel you are the one in love. Rating: 4.5

Mr Foolish, a team-up with Afrobeat icon and son of Afrobeat inventor late Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti, is one Afrobeat classic we won’t forget it a hurry. The banger was produced by two top Nigerian music producers, Seyi Keyz and Pheelz. Rating: 4. It seems Adekunle Gold has finally found his love. In Surrender, he surrenders to the overpowering charm of the an unnamed girl: ”I surrender I surrender you don win oh baby”. It contains super dope, funny lyrics and it’s highly melodious. Rating: 4.5

Damn Delilah tells the tale of unfaithful wife who betrayed her husband and eloped with another man. He likens the unfaithful woman to biblical Delilah who let out her husband’s secrets which led to his defeat: ”To hell with you Delilah/ You made me weak and left/ Burn in hell Delilah/ You took my strength away’. Brilliant! Plus, Alternative music guru-producer, Seyikeyz did justice to the perfect fusion of Afro-Alternative and Afro-Rock sounds. Rating: 4.5

What do you get when two Highlife stars as Adekunle Gold and Flavour team up? Of course a fire track like Yoyo. Rating: 4. Money was a hit single produced by Highlife production wizard, Pheelz. Rating: 4. Pablo Alakori is another nice song on About 30. The Ghanaian Highlife-infused melody rests in rich instrumentation. On top of that he was backed up by hypnotic female vocalist, Simi. The message of the song is also cool as it condemns laziness and dirty-dealing: ”Wuru wuru to the answer oh/ Mago Mago no be the way oh/ Wayo no be the answer oh/ No shortcut abeg ”. Rating: 4

Remember lashes out at those who refused to help him when he wasn’t a star yet. The dance-able satirical joint also is a piece of advice for those in the position to help to help as no one is sure of what tomorrow may bring- tables might turn: ‘Today na your turn/ Tomorrow na my own/ Watch out for me/ I hope say you go remember me oh’. Good song. Rating: 4. Celebrities like other humans do go through hard times despite all the glitters that come with stardom. This message was passed through Fame which is a cool Alternative song. Rating: 3.5

The lyrics of Somebody may not be extraordinary, it definitely sits on a super dope beat. Rating: 3. There is nothing spectacular about Mama. It is a regular Highlife song that sits on average instrumentation. Rating: 2.5. There Is A God off the About 30 album is the Alternative musician’s collaboration with one of Nigeria’s biggest and best choir, Lagos Community Gospel Choir. Is there a need for review here? I don’t think so as the cool joint speaks for itself. Rating: 4

Back To Start takes us back to the times when the Nigerian Naira was equivalent to the Great British Pounds;  times when there were sufficient employment opportunities and when basics were affordable. It is a reflection on how bad things have become in Nigeria. He indirectly calls on Nigerian leaders to take Nigeria back to ‘default settings’. The message sits amidst a rich Pheelz-produced instrumentation. Rating: 4

Though he brought England’s Jacob Banks on Ire remix , for me, it’s just as good as the original. Rating: 4.5. Call On Me was a hit single Adekunle released last year. It is a track that can still be enjoyed decades from now. Rating: 4

Overall Rating: 3.4/5

About 30 is a timeless playlist that will definitely be nominated in the Album of the Year category at couple of music awards that will be held in the last months of 2018 or in 2019.
