There are tens of music video directors in Nigeria today. While some directors as DJ Tee, Sesan and Clarence Peters are veteran; some directors as Unlimited LA, Adasa Cookey and Kemi Adetiba are talented and well-known; while some are talented and fast-rising. One of the directors that belong to the latter category is Avalon Okpe. Whenever you see Tokindrumz Pictures on your TV screen, it’s an Avalon Okpe-shot video.
In recent times he has directed quite a number of videos for Nigerian music superstars as Oritshefemi and Solidstar, for DJ Neptune and for long-time modern Highlife duo, Bracket. Sexy Steel’s latest release, ‘Sisi’ remix video was also shot by the director. The most recent of Avalon Okpe’s works is Oritshefemi’s ‘Awoo Ewa’ video that was released barely two days ago. The director chose an appropriate location for the video shoot and created great montages to portray the image of a slum. He took the singer back to his roots despite the change of status from a common street boy to a famous and rich singer.
In ‘Panya’, the talented director presented what appears to be his selling point: a very nice choreography. The wonderful story teller, with ‘Sisi’ remix, told a story of three guys (Sexy Steel, Tekno and Olamide) who were interested in the same girl. They all tried to woo her but she rejected them all with the exception of Sexy Steel who persevered till she gave him audience. Sometime in the recent past, Nigerian Afropop superstar, Solidstar searched carefully for a director to convert his latest hot jam, ‘Wait’ refix ft Tiwa Savage and Patoranking, into a visual and he ended up with the choice of Avalon Okpe.
Avalon Okpe-shot videos appear very simple and cost-efficient yet the content of songs are well-interpreted into good visuals. I strongly believe ‘Wait’ refix video that may be released soon will push the fast-rising director to a higher level.
