For some years now many non-Nigerian African artistes from South Africa to Tanzania and Ghana, have come to realize the importance of working with their Nigerian counterparts and vice versa. Such collaborations include but not limited to: Wizkid X R2Bees, Wande Coal X R2bees, Becca X MI, Sarkodie X Burna Boy, Yemi Alade X Sarkodie, Stoneboy X Yung6ix, Diamond and Flavour and Waje X Diamond.
DJ Maphorisa is one other artiste who has teamed up with Nigerian artistes a number of times both for production and collaboration. Guess who is behind the production of Afropop superstar, Wizkid’s hit banger, ‘In My Bed’. DJ Maphorisa did it. Towards the end of 2014, Dancehall/ Afropop artiste, Runtown dropped a single titled ‘The Banger’ which is a powerful and groovy tune. He did not only produce the song but also contributed a sweet verse in South African tongue. Just last year, he produced a dance tune, ‘Lole’ for dance song/ freestyle artiste, Skales. Before that, he was featured on Davido’s Shizzi-produced hit song, ‘The Sound’.
The multi-talented South African producer does not hide his bias for dance songs. He achieves this with his mastery of the drums, use of bass effects and the use of pause and suspense in-between his beats-very evident in ‘In My Bed’ and ‘Lole’- to provide banging beats for Nigerian artistes and possibly some other artistes scattered around Africa. It is important to note he was nominated in the ‘African Artiste’ category at the 2015 Headies Awards alongside Sarkodie, AKA, Diamond Platnumz and Cassper Nyovest- a non-Nigerian category for the African artiste with the greatest achievement, impact and infiltration into Nigerian music scene.
The winner however was never announced. Despite non-declaration of any of them, I believe DJ Maphorisa is the best export to the Nigerian music scene based on his efforts since 2014 to date. Plus, who knows what is going on in his studio right now or the Nigerian artiste he is currently working with.
