This article will compare The Mavin signees: Reekado Banks and Korede Bello.
Korede Bello and Reekado Banks got signed to Don Jazzy-owned Mavin Records the same day in 2014 and have been doing fine for themselves and their label since then. While there is no doubt the two artistes are talented, music commentators are divided over who is better. Some believe Reekado is better while some believe he is overrated.
Reekado Banks started with fire the year he got the record deal. He sang the chorus of Mavin smash hit, Dorobucci, in 2014. He also supported his boss, Don Jazzy for the major work in Adaobi. His talent and efforts earned him ‘Rookie of the Year’ at that year’s Headies Awards. In 2015 he released songs as: Corner, Katapult, and Sugar Baby. He won the ‘Next Rated’ award at the 2015 Headies and the video of Katapult also won the ‘Best Video’. He started 2016 with the release of a hit single, Oluwa Ni.
Korede Bello dropped Godwin in 2015 and within weeks evolved into a monster hit. He released later in the year a song titled Somebody featuring ‘alternative’ singer, Asa. Towards the end of 2015 Korede dished out a Don-Jazzy produced Pop single, Mr Romantic, which is still being aired by all music channels in Africa. Mungo Park is the latest of Bello’s works. The song now has over one million views on Youtube. He signed endorsement deals with telecommunications company, Glo and African fabric brand, Woodin last year. He was made Nigeria Police Force ambassador. He won the ‘Best Pop Single’ with his Godwin and was also nominated in the ‘Next Rated’ category at the 2015 Headies Awards.
Reekado Banks has won more awards than label mate, Korede Bello with a total of two Headies awards on his shelf. Korede has just one on his. It is however important to note they have only been nominated for awards twice in their respective music careers: Korede has been nominated twice in the ‘Next Rated’ and ‘Best Pop Single’ categories while Reekado has nominated twice in the ‘Rookie of the Year’ and ‘Next Rated’ categories. While awards are good, they are not a sufficient and ultimate condition to judge an artiste’s performance.
Korede has been more consistent with quality and ever-green songs as Godwin, Somebody and MrRomantic. Catapult and Oluwa Ni are Reekado’s only quality or ever-green songs. Sugar Baby stands in-between a quality song and a song of the moment.
While Korede is still enjoying Globacom endorsement deal, Woodin renewed his deal about a couple of days ago. This attests to Korede’s general public acceptance and relevance in the music industry. Don’t forget, Korede Bello is an ambassador of the Nigeria Police Force too.
They are both young and brilliant. Korede Bello, however, with his achievements so far is a better, bigger artiste.
