Canadian R&B/ Soul singer, The Weeknd, made history yesterday when he bagged 6 out of the 19 award nominations he got at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards. He won in the categories of ‘Top Streaming Artist’, ‘Top Hot 100 Artist’, ‘Top R&B artist’, ‘Top R&B Album’, ‘The Song Sales Artist and ‘Top Radio Songs artist’ (billboard.com). Earlier this year, he was nominated at the 2015 Grammy Awards in 7 different categories and finally went home with two: ‘Best Urban Contemporary Album’ and ‘Best R&B Performance’.
These achievements however are not unexpected considering his energy, magical vocals, great choice of words and classic instrumentation that characterize his songs especially the 2015 Beauty Behind The Madness album.
Beauty Behind The Madness, which won the ‘Top R&B Album’ at the just concluded Billboard Awards and ‘Best Urban Contemporary Album’ at the Grammy Awards that was held earlier this year, houses 14 powerful tracks out of which are 11 magical R&B tunes: ‘Tell Your Friends’ and ‘Often’ are very nice R&B tunes. ‘The Hills’ which won him ‘Top R&B artist’ is lovely love tune with crazy lyrics and video. ‘Acquainted’ is a great R&B tune that talks the fears of a lady to fall in love with him and how pleasurable it is to think they got acquainted: ‘to say we’re in love is dangerous but girl i’m so glad we were ‘acquainted’. There is no need to say much about ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ because it was everywhere. The Weeknd’s diction in guitar-rich ‘Shameless’ speaks volume about his uncommon creative mind: ‘I don’t wanna hurt you but you live for the pain/ I’m not trying to say it but it’s what you became’ ‘I will always be there for you girl I have no shame’ ‘I am so used to being used’. He teamed up with Lana Del Rey for ‘Prisoner’. They birthed a Soul/R&B song that could send the mind to a place of soliloquy and make the listener feel like the persona.
‘Earned It’ which is the sound track for ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ was also nominated in the ‘Best Song Written for Visual Media’ category. ‘In the Night’ is an average R&B song with well-written lyrics. He followed with a killer!- ‘As You Are’. The Weeknd unleashed his vocal demon here. He wrapped up the album with ‘Angel’. Here, he expresses his doubts about his ex taking him back because of the height of his mistakes; he regrets his actions and wishes her luck in her future relationship(s): ‘I hope you find somebody, somebody to love’.
Congrats to The Weeknd. They are indeed awards well-deserved.
