Video: Emergency Vs Good Time

This piece will compare Kiss Daniel’s video, Good Time and D’banj’s latest video,  Emergency.

good time        emergency

The bases for comparison of the videos are: both songs are Afrobeat-inspired and are both one-location shots.

Good time was directed by AJE filmworks. Aje filmworks is not new in the video production business. He has shot some big projects as Megbele by Omawunmi, Komole by Sean Tizzle and Make Am by Patoranking (to mention a few before) before the said video.

After a long time, D’banj finally got a mega hit, Emergency, which he released earlier this year. The visuals of the song created was by award-winning cinematographer,  unlimited LA. The director has credit for some big videos as Catapult, which won him the best video director of the year at an Awards in 2015. He has also shot a video for Burna boy this year, Jealousy.

In Good Time,  resources were well-managed by the talented director. It was shot in one location. The video gave an exact visual interpretation of the song. Kiss Daniel had had a long day and wanted to unwind so he came down with his girlfriend to a club for some party.  He checks the lady he came with: ”Iyawo mi gan mbe nile’ ‘just wanna have a good time.  This is a very good video.

Emergency  was also shot in one location.  The video started with one of D’banj’s fans waiting outside the venue for D’banj’s show. While doing this, he got a text from SLOT Limited Nigeria  and read excitedly his order had arrived it’s destination. D’banj drove to the show venue in a car with a customized plate number ‘SLOT’. It is apparently a SLOT-sponsored video as D’banj has an endorsement deal with the phone vendor.  Wearing the Fela kind of costume and that of his back up dancers, D’banj reminds one of Fela’s back up dancers then. The ‘Koko master’ brought back to life some of Afrobeat legend, Fela’s dance steps. The video was well-choreographed. D’banj in the end left with a chick two of his fans were deeply interested in- in magical manner.  A quite interesting story.

This is great work from Unlimited LA. The video will surely suspend D’banj’s dwindling stature in the Nigerian music industry, at least push him up a bit and also make this year another good year for him.
