This piece will discuss the impact of Drake’s latest collaboration with Wizkid on the latter.
Drake released a new song online yesterday titled One Dance featuring Afropop superstar, Wizkid and Kyla. This is not the first time international collaboration for Wizkid. He was featured last year by popular South African DJ Maphorisa in Soweto Baby alongside DJ Buckz and R&B legend R. Kelly in Thank You. Before these collaborations, Drake jumped on his award-winning pop single, Ojuelegba which later turned Ojuelegba Remix. The latest collaboration makes it the second time they will be on the same song.
This is however different from past collaborations because this time Drake, who is a leading Hip-hop artiste in the world, wanted Wizkid on his song.
Impact: This collaboration would reposition his stance- as an African artiste- on the international scene and increase his fan base in the United States. Wizkid like Davido may also be signed to one of the biggest record labels in the United States soon. He recently acquired a residential property in celebrity-studded Los Angeles. His choice of location within the US may not be unconnected to a record deal that may be announced in near future.
Whether he gets signed to a global record label or not, Wizkid has really done well for himself, Nigerian music and African music at large.
